Improvisation, or taksim, is an extremely widespread term in modal music. In many instances, rhythm is added to the equation and then we can say that we have modal rhythmic improvisation (or more simply the rhythmic solo). The musician is called to build solos into a given rhythm, usually derived from the repertoire of a particular region. In this workshop we work on various methods to approach rhythmic improvisation, taking as a starting point repertoires familiar to the musicians involved. Then, we examine the structures and forms that have been developed through various music traditions. The Ottoman Empire may have fought wars from Algeria through to the Indian Ocean, and Poland through to Ethiopia, it may have had in its dominion most of the known languages and religions of the times, but when we talk about Ottoman Music we mostly refer to the music of Constantinople. So the main subject of this workshop are the so called makams and in a broader sense the whole music of the Constantinople. The idea is to approach this set of makams practically, through a wide repertoire - mainly from Ottoman music. The workshop’s main focus will be on listening exercises, the recordings and practical exercises on the instruments, although the required analysis will take place as well. Wherever necessary, the repertoire will be extended beyond Ottoman music, based on old recordings of taksims, and gazels. The set of makam that this workshop will concentrate on are: Rast, Bayati, Saba, Hicaz, Segah and Huzzam. Musicians of all levels, playing instruments relevant to this genre of music are welcome, as long as they have a basic knowledge of reading music. Visit the site of the Music Village.

This workshop will concentrate on music coming from Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, and the surrounding countries that used to be a part of the Ottoman Empire. We will focus on a few maqams, or modes (depending on your point of view), and we will try and see how they form, modulate, mutate, and adjust themselves in the different situations occurring through various repertoire.

Musicians of all levels, playing instruments relevant to this genre of music, are welcome, as long as they have a basic knowledge of reading music.

Ateliers et Masterclasses

ATELIERS & MASTERCLASSES

     a. Le makam d'Istanbul
     b. Répertoire grec pour ney et instruments similaires
     c. Improvisation rythmique dans la musique modale
     d. Improvisation libre
